1970s Babe Ruth Baseball Cards
As Topps emerged as the major baseball card producer in the 1970's, fewer original Babe Ruth cards were produced. Topps did release a few cards in 1973 recognizing Ruth's career milestone achievements, most notably a Career Home Run Leaders card with Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays prior to Aaron overtaking Ruth as the all-time home run leader. A handful of promotional card sets also included Ruth in the 70's.The 1973 Topps All-Time Home Run Leaders card (#1) is one of the more popular Ruth cards printed in the 1970s. The card features a large photo of Ruth with Hank Aaron and Willie Mays underneath, not long before Aaron was able to pass the Bambino as baseball's all-time home run leader.
As part of the same 1973 set, Topps produced another card of only the Babe. Card #474, featuring a head shot of Ruth, is one of the more valuable cards of Babe Ruth widely distributed in the 70's. Even in nearly perfect condition, it can usually be found for a couple hundred dollars.
Ruth is also featured in the 1972 Kellogg's baseball card set. The 15-card set includes a few players from the Ruth era, including Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, and Tris Speaker. There are two Ruth cards in the 1972 Kellogg's set - #6 and #14.
